The West Chester University Wind Bands welcome composer Roshanne Etezady to campus for a residency and celebration of her music. The Concert Band begins its performance with Etezady’s Jump Scare Tango. The start of professional baseball’s spring training is celebrated with a performance of John Philip Sousa’s The National Game.

Composer Roshanne Etezady joins the WCU Wind Bands to kick off the spring semester. The Wind Symphony opens the program with Paul Dooley’s March Jubilee followed by Etezady’s Against the Rain and Points of Departure, which premiered at West Chester University almost 15 years ago to the day. The spirited Parhelion and imaginative Anahita introduce the Wind Ensemble’s presentation of Etezady’s work, with Michele Fernadenz’s Unidad en Ritmo and Chang su Koh’s Fantajia completing this exciting concert.

Wind Ensemble Performance: East Meets West Wind Band Invitational

High School bands from opposite sides of the Commonwealth will be featured in the Fourth Annual “East Meets West” Invitational concert. Bethel Park and Hershey High Schools will represent their communities as two of the state’s most outstanding high school wind bands. The WCU Wind Ensemble will feature the world premiere of a to be named composition by jazz icon, Billy Childs that features alto saxophonist, Steve Wilson. WCU’s Jonathan Ragonese will join Wilson in a performance of Bordello Nights by Las Vegas based jazz artist Jenn Bellor.

The Concert Band opens its Final performance of the year with San Antonio Dances by Frank Ticheli. John Mackey’s Ringmaster’s March is also featured. A fanfare set of Brian Balmage’s Fanfare Canzonique and Andrew Blair’s anti-Fanfare open the Wind Symphony’s performance. Carter Pann’s Hold This Boy and Listen adds a touch of tenderness before the concert concludes with Cosmopolitan America, a march by Helen May Butler, known in her time as “The Female Sousa.”

Concluding its performances for the year, the Wind Ensemble presents an eclectic offering of compositions. Pennsylvania composer, Rob Traugh’s Sparke and Fire and Benjamin Britten’s Passacaglia from Peter Grimes open the concert. Elizabeth Pfaffe then joins the Wind Ensemble for a performance of Zirk, a concerto for horn and wind ensemble by Scott Boerma. The Wind Ensemble closes its season with John Mackey’s epic Wine Dark Sea.
